This is not a tale of modern innovation. It is a story about tradition, cold water, and the remarkable things that grow in it.

The White Sea: Where Our Kelp Begins

The White Sea is a southern inlet of the Barents Sea, lying almost entirely within the Arctic Circle in Russia's Arkhangelsk region. It is one of the smallest seas in the world — roughly 90,000 square kilometres — and one of the least disturbed. There is no significant industrial shipping traffic. No offshore drilling. No large-scale aquaculture. What there is, in abundance, is cold, mineral-rich water fed by rivers draining some of the last untouched boreal forests in Europe.

At its heart sit the Solovetsky Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage archipelago known for its medieval monastery and its stark, quiet beauty. The waters surrounding these islands are where our kelp grows — wild, unhurried, and entirely unfarmed.

This distinction matters. Farmed seaweed, which accounts for the vast majority of the global supply, is cultivated on ropes or nets in coastal waters. It grows quickly and is harvested on tight commercial cycles. Wild kelp, by contrast, grows on the sea floor at its own pace, drawing minerals directly from the bedrock and the water column. The result is a fundamentally different product — denser, more complex, and shaped entirely by its environment.

The Arkhangelsk region has a documented relationship with commercial seaweed processing stretching back to at least 1918, when the Arkhangelsk Seaweed Plant was established — one of the first dedicated seaweed processing facilities in Russia^[1]. That facility marked the beginning of a formalised industry, but local communities had been gathering and using seaweed for generations before that.

A Tradition Passed Down Through Generations

Each year, from roughly May to September, small crews set out from the Solovetsky Islands and the surrounding coastline to harvest kelp. They work from traditional wooden boats — sometimes called carbine boats — that have changed remarkably little in design over the decades. The boats are small enough to navigate the shallow, rocky waters where the best kelp grows, and sturdy enough to handle the unpredictable Arctic weather.

The harvesting itself is done entirely by hand. There are no trawlers scraping the sea floor. No mechanical harvesters pulling up everything in their path. Instead, trained harvesters use long-handled cutting tools to selectively cut mature fronds from each plant, leaving the holdfast and younger growth intact.

This matters enormously for sustainability. When kelp is cut properly — above the meristematic growth zone — the plant regrows naturally, often within a single season. It is the marine equivalent of pruning a fruit tree: done well, it actually encourages healthier, more vigorous growth the following year. Done badly, with trawling or root extraction, recovery can take years or may not happen at all.

Harvesters undergo specific training before they are permitted to work the beds. They learn to identify species, assess maturity, judge current and tide conditions, and cut at precisely the right point on each frond. It is skilled, physical work — standing in a rocking boat, reaching into cold water with a blade, often for hours at a stretch. There is a reason this knowledge is passed from experienced harvesters to newcomers in person, season after season. You cannot learn it from a manual.

The seasonal rhythm serves a second purpose: it gives the kelp beds a full winter and spring to recover before the next harvest. This is not a managed sustainability programme imposed from outside. It is how it has always been done — because the harvesters understood, long before anyone used the word "sustainable," that you do not take more than the sea can give back.

What Makes White Sea Kelp Different?

All kelp is not created equal. The species might be the same — Laminaria digitata grows in Scotland, Norway, and the White Sea alike — but the environment shapes the final product in ways that genuinely matter.

The key variable is temperature. Kelp in warmer waters (the coasts of Brittany, southern Japan, even parts of Scotland) grows relatively quickly. Warmer water means faster cell division, longer fronds, and a higher proportion of structural tissue. The plant prioritises growth.

In the Arctic White Sea, water temperatures hover between -1.5°C and 6°C for much of the year^[2]. Growth is dramatically slower. But slower growth means the plant spends proportionally more of its energy producing bioactive compounds — pigments, polysaccharides, minerals, antioxidants — rather than simply getting bigger. The result is a shorter, thicker, more nutrient-dense frond.

Two primary species are harvested in these waters:

Laminaria (kelp) — a large brown seaweed rich in iodine, alginates, and fucoidan. It is the foundation of most seaweed supplements worldwide, but Arctic-grown specimens consistently show higher mineral concentrations than their temperate counterparts^[3].
Fucus (bladderwrack) — a smaller, branching brown seaweed with a distinct profile of polyphenols and fucoidans. It has been used in traditional medicine across northern Europe for centuries, and modern research is beginning to validate some of those uses^[4].

We want to be straightforward here: we are not claiming that White Sea kelp is "the best in the world." That kind of marketing language does not serve anyone. What we are saying is that Arctic-grown kelp has a measurably different nutrient profile from kelp grown in warmer waters — denser in certain minerals and bioactive compounds — and that difference is a direct consequence of where and how it grows. The science supports this. Whether that difference matters to you depends on what you are looking for.

From Harvest to Product: The PRO-MAX Journey

Raw kelp, for all its nutritional density, has a limitation. Much of the good stuff — the minerals, the polysaccharides, the bioactive compounds — is locked inside the cell walls. Seaweed cell walls are made of tough polysaccharides (alginates, cellulose) that human digestion cannot fully break down. Eat a piece of raw kelp and you will absorb some of its nutrients, but a significant proportion will pass straight through.

Scottish and Irish kelp are perfectly good products — the difference is environmental, not one of quality versus inferiority. Is hand-harvesting really sustainable?: Yes — when done properly, it is among the most sustainable forms of marine harvesting. Hand-cutting allows harvesters to select only mature fronds and leave the plant's holdfast and growing tissue intact. The kelp regrows naturally, often within one season. This is fundamentally different from trawling or dredging, which can destroy entire kelp beds. The seasonal harvesting cycle (May to September only) provides additional recovery time.
Can I visit the harvesting area?: The Solovetsky Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are open to visitors during the summer months, typically June to September. Tourism infrastructure is limited — this is a remote Arctic archipelago, not a resort — but guided tours of the islands and monastery are available. Witnessing the kelp harvest itself would require specific arrangements, as the harvesting crews work from boats in waters that are not part of standard tourist routes.
