Walk along the rocky shoreline of almost any cold northern coast and you will find them: thick, rubbery fronds anchored to the seabed, swaying with the tide. These are brown algae — members of the class Phaeophyceae — and they are among the most ancient multicellular organisms on the planet. Within that family, two genera stand out for their nutritional significance: Laminaria (the large kelps) and Fucus (the wracks, sometimes called bladderwrack).

Both thrive in cold, nutrient-dense waters — the White Sea, the Norwegian coast, the North Atlantic, and the coastal stretches of the Arctic. Humans have harvested both for centuries. In East Asia, Laminaria japonica (kombu) has been a dietary staple since at least the Heian period in Japan (Mouritsen, 2013). In Europe, Fucus vesiculosus was gathered along Atlantic coastlines for use as animal feed, soil fertiliser, and folk medicine — it was the original source from which iodine was first isolated in 1811 (Teas et al., 2004). These are not niche superfoods discovered by modern marketing. They are part of the human diet stretching back generations.

Laminaria: The Iodine Powerhouse

The genus Laminaria includes several commercially important species: L. digitata, L. hyperborea, and L. saccharina (now reclassified as Saccharina latissima). These are the large kelps — some species grow blades several metres long, forming dense underwater forests that shelter entire marine ecosystems.

What sets laminaria apart nutritionally is its exceptionally high iodine content. Depending on species, season, and geography, dried laminaria can contain between 1,500 and 8,000 µg of iodine per gram — far more than most other edible seaweeds (Teas et al., 2004, Thyroid). This is relevant because iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), which regulate metabolism, energy production, and neurodevelopment (NHS, 2023).

Minerals — including calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium, often in higher concentrations than land-based vegetables.

In East Asian food cultures, kombu (a laminaria species) is consumed daily — in dashi broth, as a wrap for rice, and as a salad ingredient. The Japanese population's historically high intake of dietary iodine from seaweed has been a subject of ongoing nutritional epidemiology research (Zava & Zava, 2011).

Fucus: The Fucoidan Source

Fucus vesiculosus, commonly known as bladderwrack, is the most widely studied species in the genus. Smaller and tougher than the large kelps, it grows in the intertidal zone — that harsh strip between high and low tide where it endures constant exposure to air, UV radiation, and mechanical stress. That environmental pressure is part of what makes fucus biochemically interesting: the plant produces high concentrations of protective compounds.

The standout compound in fucus is fucoidan — a complex sulphated polysaccharide that has become one of the most actively researched marine bioactives of the past two decades. While laminaria also contains fucoidan, fucus species tend to contain significantly higher concentrations (Ale et al., 2011).

Research into fucoidan is extensive, with over 2,000 published studies. Key areas of investigation include:

Immune modulation — laboratory studies suggest fucoidan may contribute to the normal function of certain immune cells, though the mechanisms are still being characterised (Fitton et al., 2015).
Gut health — fucoidan has shown prebiotic-like properties in vitro, potentially supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria (Shang et al., 2016).
Metabolic support — preliminary studies have explored fucoidan's potential role in supporting normal lipid metabolism, though human evidence remains early-stage.

Fucus also contains iodine, though typically at lower concentrations than laminaria — usually between 200 and 600 µg per gram of dried weight. It has a different mineral emphasis too, with notably higher levels of chromium and zinc compared to many kelp species.

In European herbal medicine, bladderwrack has a long history. It was listed in the British Pharmacopoeia from the 19th century onwards, traditionally used for thyroid support and metabolic function. It remains one of the few seaweeds with established use in Western herbal traditions.

Is laminaria the same as kelp?

In common usage, yes — "kelp" typically refers to large brown seaweeds of the order Laminariales, which includes the genus Laminaria. Strictly speaking, kelp is a broader group that includes several genera, but laminaria is the one you will encounter most often in food and supplement contexts.

Which seaweed has more iodine?

Laminaria, by a significant margin. Dried laminaria typically contains 3 to 15 times more iodine per gram than dried fucus. This is why laminaria-based products are generally preferred when the primary goal is to support iodine intake.
